How to Find Your Creative Style (and Why It Starts with a Feeling)

If you’ve ever sat down to create and thought,
“I don’t even know what my style is…” — you’re not alone.

So many of us go looking for creative style like it’s something out there waiting to be discovered. Something we need to define, name, and get “right.”

But here’s a softer, truer way to look at it:

Your creative style isn’t something you find.
It’s something you feel your way into.

Your Creative Style Is a Feeling First

When people search for how to find your creative style, they’re often expecting rules—colors to use, techniques to follow, or a certain “look” to develop.

But style doesn’t begin with how something looks.

It begins with how something feels.

Think about the feeling you’re drawn to when you create:

  • A sense of calm
  • A quiet kind of hope
  • Softness and comfort
  • Nostalgia or meaning
  • A slower, more intentional pace

That feeling becomes the foundation of your creative style.

The fabrics, textures, colors, and details?
They come later.

Start Small: Create a Pocket of Hope

One of the simplest ways to begin discovering your style is by creating something small and meaningful—what I like to call a pocket of hope.

Not a perfect project.
Not something to impress anyone.

Just a small piece that holds a feeling.

As you create, gently ask yourself:
What would hope look like in my hands right now?

Maybe it’s:

  • Soft, layered fabrics that feel comforting
  • Muted, peaceful colors
  • A few slow stitches that help you breathe
  • A meaningful word tucked into the piece

This is where your style begins—not in perfection, but in intention.

Notice What You Naturally Choose

Your creative style is already showing up… in quiet ways.

Pay attention to:

  • The materials you reach for again and again
  • The colors that feel like “home” to you
  • The little details you love adding
  • The overall feeling your pieces carry

These are not random preferences.

They are clues.

Instead of questioning them, try trusting them.
They’re leading you toward a style that is uniquely yours.

Let It Be Gentle. Let It Grow.

There’s no rush to define your style.

In fact, trying to label it too soon can make everything feel forced.

Your style will evolve as you do.

Some days it may feel light and airy.
Other days, more grounded and quiet.

That doesn’t mean you’re inconsistent.
It means you’re creating honestly.

Over time, a rhythm forms.
And that rhythm becomes your style.

Create First, Understand Later

If you’re waiting to “figure out your style” before you create, this is your gentle permission to begin anyway.

Because clarity doesn’t come before creating.
It comes through creating.

Make something small.
Follow what feels right.
Let it be imperfect.

Then make another.

A Final Thought

You don’t need to chase a style.
You don’t need to define it perfectly.

You just need to notice what feels like you…
and follow it, one small piece at a time.

Your style is already there.
It’s been waiting for you to trust it.
